British Coatings Federation launches #SustainableCoatings, #SustainableInks campaign

By 4th November 2021Blog

“The coatings our members provide help protect and increase the longevity of products around us, enhancing life cycles and boosting sustainability. In terms of the sustainability of the coatings themselves, we have made significant value chain progress, but we know there is still much more to be done.”

– Tom Bowtell, CEO of the British Coatings Federation

BCF’s members’ products – paint, printing inks, wallcoverings, and specialist coatings – are essential to the UK economy. They are all around us.

As with all industry in the UK – and around the world – our members know they need to do their bit to help improve the environment, even as they continue to provide products integral to our lives. We are proud of the positive steps we have taken towards greater sustainability over the past couple of decades from substantially reducing our carbon footprint and use of VOCs, to creating less waste and recycling more of what is left rather than sending it to landfill.

Moreover, coatings may sometimes be part of a more sustainable solution in themselves: for example, more durable structures need replacing less often; cleaner, smoother hulls mean ships can move more smoothly through the water, requiring less fuel.

However, while we have taken big strides to be more sustainable, we know we need to do more to help industry, and the UK, achieve its much more ambitious future environmental targets. Our members are working hard to make continued progress towards a more circular, sustainable sector.

Our #SustainableCoatings and #SustainableInks campaigns will showcase the work we and our members have done in this area and, importantly, as we nail down concrete milestones and KPIs, what else we will be doing to play our part over the coming months and years in creating a greener future for all.
